Moviegoers are still mad about Bridget Jones.

“Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy,” the fourth installment in the love-struck franchise, opened solidly to $35.5 million from 71 markets at the international box office. Those ticket sales outshined “Sex and the City 2” as the biggest start for a romantic comedy in comparable overseas markets, according to distributor Universal Pictures. The film, starring Renée Zellweger as Bridget Jones, debuted on Peacock in the United States.

The fourth “Bridget Jones” enjoyed the biggest start in the United Kingdom and Ireland with $14.8 million, followed by Australia with $3.3 million, and France (where Studio Canal is handling the rollout) with $3.3 million.

Though domestic cinema operators are disappointed that “Bridget” isn’t playing in U.S. theaters, the franchise has always been far bigger at the international box office. For 2001’s “Bridget Jones’s Diary” ($334 million globally), 2004’s “Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason” ($265 million globally) and 2016’s “Bridget Jones’s Baby” ($211 million), foreign ticket sales accounted for 79% to 89% of overall revenues.

Directed by Michael Morris, “Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy” follows the heroine as a widowed single mother who reenters the dating world and finds herself smitten with a younger man. Hugh Grant, Colin Firth, Emma Thompson and Leo Woodall round out the cast. The film carries a $50 million production budget.

Elsewhere at the international box office, “Captain America: Brave New World” towered above the competition with $92.4 million from 52 international markets. Disney’s Marvel adventure also flew to No. 1 in North America with $88.5 million over the traditional weekend and $100 million through the Presidents Day holiday on Monday. “Brave New World” is nearing the $200 million mark globally with $192.4 million in the bank after four days on the big screen. The film cost north of $180 million to produce and at least $100 million to promote.

In “Captain America: Brave New World,” Anthony Mackie takes up the star-spangled shield after Chris Evans retired from playing Cap in 2019’s “Avengers: Endgame.” China was the biggest overseas market with $10.5 million, though the film was trounced by local-language title “Ne Zha 2,” which has become the highest-grossing release in the country’s history with $1.6 billion and counting. Other top territories for “Captain America” include the United Kingdom with $8.5 million, Mexico with $6.6 million and Korea with $5.6 million.

Between “Captain America: Brave New World” and “Ne Zha 2,” Imax notched a near-record Presidents Day weekend with $43 million. It’s the second-biggest Presidents Day haul for the company after 2018, when the Chinese New Year coincided with “Black Panther” to deliver a mighty $52.3 million.

“Brave New World” launched in Imax with $18 million from 1,500 premium screens across the globe through Monday. Meanwhile “Ne Zha 2” added another $22 million over the weekend solely from Imax screens in China, boosting its haul in the territory to $104 million. The animated sequel is now the highest-grossing Imax release in China, surpassing “Avengers: Endgame” ($83.5 million).

“Captain America: Brave New World” delivered a heroic $88.5 million in its box office debut, with domestic ticket sales projected to climb to $100 million through the Presidents Day holiday on Monday.

Despite unfavorable reviews and terrible audience scores, the 35th entry in Disney’s Marvel Cinematic Universe arrived slightly above projections and ranks as the biggest opening weekend of the year. It’s also the fourth-best Presidents Day launch on record following 2018’s “Black Panther” ($242 million), 2016’s “Deadpool” ($152 million) and 2023’s “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” ($120 million).

Overseas, “Captain America: Brave New World” collected an additional $92.4 million for a global start of $192.4 million through Monday. In the $180-million tentpole, Anthony Mackie takes up the mantle as Cap from Chris Evans, who played the star-spangled Avenger in Marvel movies for nearly a decade. Directed by Julius Onah (“The Cloverfield Paradox), “Captain America: Brave New World” finds Mackie’s Sam Wilson at the center of international catastrophe after the presidential election of Thaddeus Ross (Harrison Ford).

“This is the first blockbuster weekend of 2025,” says senior Comscore analyst Paul Dergarabedian.

This holiday weekend was no doubt a busy one for the nation’s multiplexes, but box office watchers are curious about the big screen endurance of “Captain America.” Disney’s Marvel movies tend to start strong regardless of critical reception, but recent entries in the series that garnered mixed-to-awful reviews, like “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania,” “Eternals” and “The Marvels,” sank like stones after No. 1 debuts. “Brave New World” holds a 51% average on Rotten Tomatoes, one of the lowest-ever MCU ratings. Then there’s the “B-” from CinemaScore exit polls, among the worst grades in the sprawling film franchise. Cinema operators need “Captain America” to remain a box office draw in subsequent weeks because there’s nothing on the film release calendar that resembles a four-quadrant blockbuster until Disney’s “Snow White” remake on March 21.

Marvel Studios, which has shown signs of wear and tear after the epic success of 2019’s “Avengers: Endgame,” has two other tentpoles over the next six months: “Thunderbolts” on May 2 and “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” on July 25.

Cap wasn’t the only newcomer to movie theater marquees. Sony’s “Paddington in Peru,” the third tale about the marmalade-loving bear, opened in second place with $13 million over the weekend and an estimated $16 million through the four-day holiday frame. Critics and audiences were charmed by the family film, which boasts a 94% on Rotten Tomatoes and an “A” grade on CinemaScore.

“Paddington,” based on the children’s series by British author Michael Bond, has always been far bigger with overseas audiences, and the third installment is no different. The third “Paddington” film, which was financed by StudioCanal for $90 million, has grossed $115 million internationally to date. The threequel has ways to go to catch up with the first two — 2014’s “Paddington” earned $326 million globally while 2017’s “Paddington 2” collected $290 million globally — in terms of worldwide ticket sales.

Elsewhere, Sony’s gory slasher “Heart Eyes” enjoyed a Valentine’s Day boost. The R-rated movie, following a masked murderer who strikes on the romantic holiday, notched the No. 3 spot with $10 million over the weekend and an estimated $11.1 million through Presidents Day. Those returns represent an impressive 20% jump from its $8.5 million debut and bring the film’s domestic box office tally to $22.6 million. “Scream” backers Spyglass Media Group financed the $18 million-budgeted “Heart Eyes,” which looks to end its box office run in the black.

Universal and DreamWorks Animation’s canine crime adventure “Dog Man” slid to fourth place after spending two weekends at No. 1. The kid-friendly film added $9.73 million over the weekend and an estimated $12.5 million through Monday. So far, “Dog Man” has grossed $69.5 million domestically and $84.4 million globally against its $40 million budget.

Rounding out the top five is “Ne Zha 2,” a Chinese-language animated film that’s become a runaway smash in the Middle Kingdom with $1.6 billion and counting. The movie, which is playing in just 660 locations, earned $7.3 million over the weekend and an estimated $8.3 million through the holiday.

Marvel’s “Captain America: Brave New World” can claim the biggest opening weekend of this young calendar year. The Disney release ripped into $40 million across Friday and preview screenings from 4,105 locations. That already clears the record-holding $36 million debut of Universal’s “Dog Man.” It also keeps “Brave New World” on track with projections for a four-day opening north of $90 million through the extended Presidents Day holiday frame.

Industry eyes are on “Brave New World,” the 34th feature entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, to see how it matches up to previous franchise heights. This rollout comes off of the November 2023 launch of “The Marvels”: a rare Marvel money-loser in theaters and the lowest-grossing installment in the series ($206 million globally). Marvel Studios bounced back last summer with “Deadpool & Wolverine,” which earned $1.3 billion worldwide and became the highest-grossing R-rated feature ever. But that production hailed from intellectual property that Disney took on in its acquisition of 20th Century Fox, serving as a threequel to two “Deadpool” installments produced outside of the Mouse House.

“Brave New World” represents a trial for the theatrical power of Disney’s homegrown Marvel properties, as well as the studio’s ability to keep the Captain America name a draw. In this entry, Anthony Mackie takes over the mantle from Chris Evans, whose Marvel character Steve Rogers hasn’t been seen since 2019’s “Avengers: Endgame.”

At a production budget of $180 million, plus global marketing costs, the true success of “Brave New World” will be measured by how it holds in the coming weeks. The film has landed some of the worst reviews for a Marvel Cinematic Universe entry, but even more ominous is its franchise-worst B- grade from moviegoer pollster Cinema Score. That lukewarm response does not indicate strong word-of-mouth — something “Brave New World” definitely needs to become a theatrical success.

Along with Mackie taking up the stars and stripes, this fourth “Captain America” installment also sees Harrison Ford taking over the role of General “Thunderbolt” Ross, now sworn in as the President of the United States despite some shady history. William Hurt previously played the character, but died in 2022. Danny Ramirez, Shira Haas, Carl Lumbly, Tim Blake Nelson and Giancarlo Esposito also star. Julius Onah directs.

Sony’s release of “Paddington in Peru” is voyaging to second place in its opening. The Brit bear’s latest adventure earned $5.1 million across Friday and previews in 3,890 theaters. That stateside start, now projected for $17 million through the four-day frame, is more marmalade on the sandwich for the third “Paddington” entry, which already opened internationally and has earned more than $100 million overseas.

“Paddington in Peru” keeps up the franchise’s reputation as a critical darling. Audiences are also feeling friendly, with Cinema Score turning in a glowing A grade. StudioCanal produced and fully financed the film at a $90 million budget.

Third place will be Universal’s “Dog Man,” which fetched another $2.7 million on Friday. After facing a somewhat steep drop over Super Bowl weekend, the DreamWorks Animation production is projecting a much stronger hold in this third frame of release, looking to add another $10.2 million for a 26% drop over the three-day frame. Total domestic gross should surpass $70 million through the holiday weekend.

Sony also has a great holdover performance with “Heart Eyes,” which is getting play over Valentine’s Day weekend with its rom-com/slasher premise after earning another $4.9 million yesterday. Spyglass and Screen Gems’ horror film is looking to add $9.8 million through the three-day frame, which would actually be an uptick from its debut last weekend. After Presidents Day, it will have surpassed a $22 million domestic total.

The animated Chinese fantasy “Ne Zha 2” looks to round out the top five, with rivals estimating a $3.1 million gross on Friday from 660 locations. It’s an impressive showing for the sequel, though this stateside haul is just pocket change really. “Ne Zha 2” has been a monster hit in China, becoming the first movie to ever gross $1 billion from a single territory. Even though its Western audience is rather niche, the film will surely rank as one of the highest-grossing movies of 2025 when the calendar year wraps up.

China’s film market enjoyed a record-breaking Lunar New Year, amassing a staggering RMB9.51 billion ($1.31 billion) in total box office revenue over the seven-day holiday period ending Feb. 4, according to a new report from Maoyan Research Institute. With 187 million tickets sold, the lucrative holiday window set an all-time high for the period.

The number easily surpassed the 2024 record of $1.09 billion.

Imax also saw its most successful Lunar New Year yet, generating $53 million in box office receipts – an increase of 57% over its previous record of $34 million in 2023. The premium format exhibitor logged its highest-ever holiday attendance, with 5.5 million moviegoers flocking to Imax screens.

Leading the charge was Enlight Media’s “Ne Zha 2,” which dominated the competition with a formidable $665.7 million to become the highest-grossing Lunar New Year title in history. The sequel to 2019’s runaway animated hit also notched a massive $36 million in Imax, securing the biggest opening weekend ever for an animated film in the format with $22 million.

“Chinese New Year unleashed one of the most impressive surges in moviegoing we’ve seen in recent years, anywhere in the world—leaving a slew of broken Imax records in its wake,” said Rich Gelfond, CEO of Imax. “This is a shot of adrenaline for moviegoing in China that comes at just the right time, with a tentpole-heavy slate of local language and Hollywood films ahead for 2025.”

Trailing “Ne Zha 2” but still posting powerhouse numbers, “Detective Chinatown 1900” cracked $313.2 million, cementing the “Detective Chinatown” franchise as China’s first film IP to cross the RMB10 billion ($1.37 billion) mark in total earnings. Alibaba’s fantasy epic “Creation of the Gods II: Demon Force” took the third spot with $137.2 million, while Bona’s naval thriller “Operation Hadal” reeled in $2.7 million in Imax.

Imax punched above its weight throughout the holiday, commanding 4.3% of the overall market despite operating just 1% of the country’s screens. The format also capped the festival period with a robust $7.2 million single-day tally, signaling sustained momentum for its slate.

“The message from audiences is clear: Imax is their first choice,” said Daniel Manwaring, CEO of Imax China. “Riding on a stronger-than-ever audience preference, Imax has transformed moviegoing into a cultural phenomenon and a social talking point. The Maoyan report highlights a trend towards established IPs in 2025 Lunar New Year films. All new films released during the period were sequels or adaptations of large-scale IP films, demonstrating a strong box office appeal.

With its Lunar New Year success fueling its strategy, Imax is continuing to roll out its local language slate globally. “Creation of the Gods II: Demon Force” and “Detective Chinatown 1900” were released in select Imax locations across 11 countries, netting more than $1.2 million overseas. Meanwhile, “Ne Zha 2” will hit Imax theaters in Australia and New Zealand starting Feb. 6.

The Lunar New Year slate is set to continue playing in the region for the next month, running alongside Hollywood tentpoles like Disney’s “Captain America: Brave New World” and the re-release of Wong Kar-wai’s “In the Mood for Love.”

The Bob Dylan biopic, starring Timothée Chalamet, has demonstrated strong staying power, maintaining its grip on the top spot despite competition from new releases.
