Abramorama has acquired the North American theatrical rights to Laura Bialis’ documentary “Vishniac,” which tells the story of the prominent 20th century photographer Roman Vishniac, known for capturing Jewish life in Eastern Europe for the American Joint Distribution Committee in the 1930s.
Abramorama starts off the theatrical release on Jan. 19 with a week-long run at New York City’s Quad Cinema, before screening in Los Angeles at the Laemmle Town Center and Laemmle Royal beginning Feb. 2.
“Vishniac” is executive produced by Nancy Spielberg, produced by Roberta Grossman and written by Sophie Sartain. It premiered at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival.
Abramorama CEO & co-chairman Karol Martesko-Fenster said, “We are thrilled to be once again working with the passionate storyteller Laura Bialis, and the producorial duo of Roberta Grossman and Nancy Spielberg. Laura has crafted a museum worthy film that manages to capture the beauty, fragility and complexity of life made all the more powerful when experienced on the big screen.”
Spielberg said, “Now more than ever, the photographs of Roman Vishniac hold an important place in the preservation of proof of a civilization that was literally obliterated by the Nazis in the 1940s. With ‘truth’ being questioned and twisted at every turn, and Holocaust deniers and anti-semitism once again on the rise, sharing Vishniac’s work with the world through Laura Bialis’ stunning film is a teaching moment for everyone. Roman’s life was colorful and complex and the in-depth understanding of the man behind the lens and the impact he left on this world is truly enlightening.”
