Martin Freeman and Paul Andrew Williams Discuss ‘A Confession,’ Variety Streaming Room

Actor Martin Freeman and director Paul Andrew Williams joined Variety senior editor Michael Schneider in the Variety Streaming Room presented by Britbox to discuss their new true crime series, “A Confession.”

Premiering on May 12, “A Confession” portrays the real-life story of Steve Fulcher, a detective who in trying to catch a woman’s killer, spurs the downfall of his own career. Freeman and Williams shared what it was like having Fulcher visit the set, how they handled filming emotional scenes and what makes “A Confession” different from other British crime dramas.

Here’s the show’s full description, from Britbox: “In 2011, after a night out with friends, 22-year-old Sian O’Callaghan disappeared. When her worried boyfriend reports her missing, Detective Superintendent Steve Fulcher (Freeman) begins to piece together her last movements. Believing Sian may still be alive and held against her will, Fulcher initiates an urgent full-scale search operation. Through diligent and painstaking police work, Fulcher and his team discover CCTV footage of Sian in the High Street, which leads to vital clues in the investigation. Racing against time, Fulcher edges closer to a chief suspect, local taxi driver Christopher Halliwell. After a tense confrontation at a remote location, Halliwell discloses information that adds a surprising layer to the investigation. The revelation leaves Fulcher standing on the precipice of a life-changing choice between following police protocol and catching a killer.”
