Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein to Meet Trump Thursday Amid Cloudy Future

UPDATED: Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein is expected to meet on Thursday with President Trump, amid conflicting reports about whether or not he will be asked to resign.

Rosenstein’s job has been in jeopardy since the New York Times reported on Friday that he mulled wearing a wire to record the president, and discussed invoking the 25th Amendment to remove him from office. Rosenstein denied the report.

In a statement on Monday, the White House said that Rosenstein and Trump had an “extended conversation” about the story over the phone. They will meet face-to-face on Thursday, according to the statement.

Earlier reports indicated that Rosenstein had either told Chief of Staff John Kelly that he would resign, or that Rosenstein had told associates that he expected to be fired on Monday.

Rosenstein’s ouster could imperil Robert Mueller’s investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election. He was supervising the probe after Attorney General Jeff Sessions had to recuse himself because of his involvement in the campaign. Solicitor general Noel Francisco will reportedly oversee the investigation in Rosenstein’s absence.

The Times reported that Rosenstein mulled invoking the 25th Amendment in the spring of 2017, shortly after the president fired FBI Director James Comey. Rosenstein had denied making comments about wearing a wire or working to remove Trump from office. Other outlets have reported that the remarks were made in jest. He was reportedly angry that a memo he wrote about James Comey was cited as grounds for firing the FBI director.

Rosenstein, a Republican, was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on April 25, 2017. He previously had a seat on the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit and served as the United States Attorney for the District of Maryland.
