Julia Phelps Named Chief Communications and Corporate Marketing Officer, ViacomCBS

Julia Phelps, a veteran of Viacom’s corporate communications staff, has been named to lead all communications efforts after the company merges with CBS.

Phelps, who has long worked with Viacom CEO Bob Bakish, slated to take charge as CEO of the combined company, is currently executive vice president of communications, culture and marketing for Viacom, a role she took over in April of 2017 after doing communications work for Viacom’s international operations. She will lead the combined company’s corporate communications, corporate marketing, corporate responsibility, special events and internal creative teams.

“Julia has been a vital force in shaping and communicating Viacom’s strategy, and revitalizing its vibrant culture and dynamic, entrepreneurial spirit,” said Bakish, in a prepared statement. “Her leadership and skill in communicating and driving change will be invaluable as we bring together the talented teams of CBS and Viacom.”

Dana McClintock, chief communications officer for CBS Corp., is expected to remain with the company, overseeing communications at the merged entity’s CBS-branded assets.

Phelps joined Viacom in 2005 from New York based agency DeVries Public Relations. A native of Canada, Phelps earned a B.A. in political science from the University of Victoria in British Columbia, and an M.S. in strategic communications from Columbia University.

The merger remains subject to regulatory approvals and other customary closing conditions. It is expected to close by the end of 2019.
