The New York Film Critics Circle will be announcing its yearly awards Wednesday morning.
The 85th ceremony will be held Jan. 7 at the New York Film Critics’ annual gala.
Antonio Banderas’s win for best actor (“Pain and Glory”) and Lupita Nyong’o (“Us”)for best actress gives them a nice boost for the Oscars. Laura Dern picked up the supporting actress for both “Marriage Story” and “Little Women” and has long been considered an Oscar favorite for “Marriage Story.”
Last year, “Roma” was named best film with Alfonso Cuarón taking the top directing prize and best cinematography. Past prize winners have included “Lady Bird,” “La La Land,” “Carol,” “Boyhood” and “American Hustle.”
Also last year’s best supporting actress winner Regina King (“If Beale Street Could Talk”) won the Oscar while best supporting actor winner Richard E. Grant (“Can You Ever Forgive Me?) picked up an Oscar nomination. “Spider-Man: In the the Spider-Verse” was named best animated film by both the NYCC and the Academy.
The New York Film Critics Circle, founded by Wanda Hale of the New York Daily News, has been handing out superlatives since 1935.
