The Golden Globes, Hollywood’s unofficial start to awards season, will kick off Sunday, Jan. 5. Ricky Gervais is returning to host the annual ceremony that celebrates the best in movies and television.
Netflix is expected to rule at the 77th show after the streaming service reigned supreme in terms of nominations, leading on the film side for Noah Baumbach’s “Marriage Story” and “Martin Scorsese’s “The Irishman,” as well as TV with “The Crown” and “Unbelievable.”
Though the Globes are notoriously unpredictable, Renee Zellweger is the favorite to win best actress in a drama for her turn as Judy Garland in the biopic “Judy.” Meanwhile, Joaquix Phoenix’s terrifying take on Batman’s arch nemesis is likely to take home the best actor in a drama for “Joker.”
Top contenders for television shows include HBO’s “Succession” and “Chernobyl,” Netflix’s “The Crown” and Amazon’s “Fleabag” with Phoebe Waller-Bridge.
Leonardo Dicaprio, Brad Pitt, Margot Robbie, Jennifer Lopez, and Christian Bale are among the A-list celebrities that will be on hand to present awards at the star-studded gala.
Tom Hanks will be honored with the Cecil B. DeMille Award, while Ellen DeGeneres will receive the Carol Burnett Award.
