Twitter Experiences Temporary Problem With Posting Tweets

UPDATED: Twitter on Friday afternoon suffered technical problems that prevented users from posting tweets to the service for about an hour.

“Tweeting is broken. We’re working on fixing it,” Patrick Traughber, a Twitter product manager, tweeted at 4:30 p.m. ET. The post was subsequently deleted.

At 5:07 p.m., Twitter’s support account on the service said the issue was resolved. “You can get back to Tweeting — this problem has been fixed! Thanks for sticking with us through that.” About 20 minutes earlier, Twitter had acknowledged the glitch, saying, “You might be experiencing trouble sending new Tweets, but we’re working on fixing this now. Sorry for the interruption and we’ll let you know when things are back to normal.”

According to website DownDetector.com, Twitter users’ reports of problems spiked just before 4 p.m. ET on Feb. 7. The issues were concentrated on the East and West coasts of the U.S., according to the site. The issues, which spanned Twitter’s web and iOS and Android app platforms, also apparently temporarily prevented users from retweeting.

Last July, Twitter had a  more severe outage that prevented users from accessing the social-networking service at all for about one hour, which also affected both web and mobile platforms.

In reporting fourth-quarter 2019 earnings this week, Twitter said it had made progress on rebuilding its core ad server, after suffering ad-tech glitches that hurt Q3 results. Twitter said it is focused on “completing our ad server rebuild in the first half of 2020.”

Twitter reported 152 million average monetizable daily active users as of the end of 2019, up 21% year over year and a 5% increase of 7 million over 145 million in the prior quarter — growth that topped analyst expectations. Average U.S. daily users grew more slowly, to 31 million for Q4 (up from 30 million in Q3).
