Music Livestreams: MTV’s Prom, a Bob Dylan Birthday Salute, Memorial Day Gigs from Yo-Yo Ma to Sublime, and a Live Drive-In Concert

For the long Memorial Day weekend, there will be plenty of chances to row, row, row your boat down the livestream. If you want to truly memorialize, Yo-Yo Ma will be playing Bach, in honor of the fallen, and Lee Brice and others will be saluting the military. If a holiday barbecue is more your mood, Sublime with Rome will be hosting one from their backyard in Long Beach, with a full-band set.

Various online “proms” are on the horizon, starting with one Friday night via MTV’s website that includes Bebe Rexha, Janelle Monae, DJ Khaled and Tory Lanez. Airborne Toxic Event and Steve Earle are both doing album-release events playing most or all of their new records in their entirety. Bob Dylan will get a birthday salute led by Joan Baez, and BET is hosting a show in memory of Andre Harrell.

Only one of these livestream shows will be happening in front of a live audience of several hundred people, though. That’s the concert by progressive rock band Spafford, which will be streaming a show Sunday night from a drive-in in their home state of Arizona. They instantly sold out the show where they’ll be performing for several hundred socially distanced vehicles that have paid by the vehicle for the privilege of trying out this new gig format. “We’re all very excited to have the chance to do this and kind of be a test subject for how people can still experience concerts right now,” says Spafford’s bassist, Jordan Fairless. “We’re going to try and get as close to the traditional concert experience as we can, while still staying safe. I think there’s going to be a big buzz in the air. You know, everyone’s excited to get some live music for the first time in over two months.”
