#REPRESENT: Success Stories’ with Hasan Minhaj, Jon M. Chu, Lulu Wang, Kumail Nanjiani, Ally Maki

May is Asian Pacific American Heritage Month, and for the first-ever installment of Variety‘s “#REPRESENT: Success Stories,” five Asian American creatives — Kumail Nanjiani, Hasan Minhaj, Lulu Wang, Jon M. Chu and Ally Maki — gathered for a lively virtual roundtable centered on their careers thus far in Hollywood.

Reflecting on the launch of his Netflix talk show, “Patriot Act,” Minhaj credits his “immigrant hustle” mentality, which he says he inherited from his parents who immigrated to the U.S. from India.

“We shot the proof-of-concept, we showed it to Netflix, and we came in the same way our parents came in. If you’re not going to let us in through the door, we’re coming in through the window. We’re coming through the back. We’re just going to make it happen,” he says.
