Jonathan Majors is joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe, having landed a key role in the third “Ant-Man” movie.
Variety has confirmed that Majors will take on an unknown role in the Marvel film opposite “Ant-Man” stars Paul Rudd and Evangeline Lilly. Peyton Reed is returning to direct the third entry in the superhero series. Reports suggest that Majors may take on the role of Kang the Conquerer, a time-traveling super-villain.
The original “Ant-Man,” released in 2015, earned over $500 million at the worldwide box office. The follow-up, 2018’s “Ant-Man and the Wasp,” eclipsed those ticket sales and generated $622 million globally.
Majors has already had a standout 2020, starring in Spike Lee’s “Da 5 Bloods” opposite Delroy Lindo and taking on the lead role of Atticus in HBO’s hit series “Lovecraft Country,” from creator Misha Green and producers Jordan Peele and J.J. Abrams.
“It’s been like a 1-2 punch. As soon as I got off the roller coaster that was ‘Da 5 Bloods’, ‘Lovecraft’ started creeping up,” Majors recently told Variety. “Spike Lee and Misha Green share many things in common, but chiefly, they both have the audacity and the nerve to say ‘Here it is’ and, because of their pedigree, because of the work they’ve made before, they can be put into very large arenas [to tell that truth].”
The graduate of the Yale School of Drama has also starred in “Hostiles,” “White Boy Rick,” and ABC’s miniseries “When We Rise.” But his career hit a new high with 2019’s “The Last Black Man in San Francisco,” which earned him a Gotham Award nomination and a supporting actor nod at the 2020 Film Independent Spirit Awards.
The actor is currently in production on “The Harder They Fall” opposite Idris Elba, Ry Cyler and Laz Alsonso. It was announced last week that Regina King, Zazie Beetz, Lakeith Stanfield, Edi Gathegi and Lindo would round out the cast of the Western. Majors leads the film as Nat Love, an outlaw who seeks revenge on the man (Elba) who killed his parents.
Deadline was first to report the news of Major’s new role in the MCU.
