Rafael Amaya Signs Multi-Project Deal With Telemundo Global Studios

“El Señor de los Cielos” star Rafael Amaya has inked a multi-project deal with Telemundo Global Studios, committing to starring in various original productions. The Mexican entertainer’s first project is slated to premiere later this year. Amaya, a telenovela veteran, is one of the best-known actors in Spanish-language media.

“This deal reaffirms Telemundo’s commitment to working with the best talent in the business and to continue creating groundbreaking original content for Latinos across all platforms,” said Karen Barroeta, exec VP of production and development at Telemundo Global Studios. Recently, the studio signed with Spain’s Planeta for exclusive rights to the complete library of all-time best-selling Spanish-language writer Corín Tellado, which reaches nearly 4,000 titles. Moreover, Telemundo Global Studios launched Telemundo Streaming Studios in May, a studio dedicated to meeting the escalating demand of Latino streaming services in the U.S. and world.

Amaya first stepped into the Latin TV landscape in 2000. His breakout role was Aurelio Casillas in “El Señor de los Cielos,” the longest-running Telemundo Super Series franchise. Based on actual events, Amaya portrayed the powerful drug dealer, who undergoes facial reconstruction while planning to disappear with his family and start a new life and avoid capture. The actor earned numerous accolades throughout the Emmy-winning drama’s seven seasons, including the outstanding achievement in Hispanic television award at the 15th Annual Hispanic Television Summit in 2017.

Amaya also appeared in “La Reina del Sur” opposite Kate del Castillo, “Aquien Te Mira” with Danna García and Christian Meier, and guest-starred in USA Network’s English-language adaptation of “Queen of the South.” Additionally, Amaya has served as co-host of the Billboard Mexican Music Awards and the Billboard Latin Music Awards and produced the short film “The Finding,” which screened at the Cannes Film Festival in 2010
