The 76th Tony Awards kicked off Sunday night in the shadow of a writers strike and as the theater industry is still struggling to crawl out from the crater left by COVID. But, the show did go on, which is a victory considering that a few weeks ago it looked as though the Writers Guild of America would picket the telecast, imperiling an evening meant to highlight the best of Broadway to a national audience.
Thanks to a deal, this year’s Tony Awards were allowed to continue, albeit in unscripted form. So viewers get to find out if returning host Ariana DeBose is as talented at improvisation as she is at singing and dancing.
The ceremony broadcasts on CBS and Paramount+, with the telecast airing from 8-11 p.m. ET/5-8 p.m. PT. The ceremony is being held at the United Palace in New York. A pre-broadcast aired on Pluto TV, where technical awards were handed out.
Those up for the prestigious awards include “Some Like It Hot,” with a total of 13 nominations, as well as “& Juliet,” “Shucked” and “New York, New York,” which received a total of nine nominations each. “Ain’t No Mo’,” “A Doll’s House,” and “Leopoldstadt” were the most nominated plays with six nods each.
Major stars like Jessica Chastain (“A Doll’s House”), Jodie Comer (“Prima Facie”), Samuel L. Jackson (“August Wilson’s The Piano Lesson”), Corey Hawkins (“Suzan-Lori Parks’ Topdog/Underdog”) and Sean Hayes (“Good Night, Oscar”) are all up for top honors, along with Broadway vets like Stephen McKinley Henderson (“Between Riverside and Crazy”) and Christian Borle (“Some Like It Hot”)
