Disney+ Sets Pixar’s ‘Elemental’ Premiere Date

Disney+ customers can start streaming Pixar’s “Elemental” animated adventure next week.

“Elemental” will hit Disney+ worldwide on Sept. 13, coming 89 days after the movie’s theatrical open. Alongside the streaming premiere of “Elemental,” Disney+ also will debut that day the making-of documentary “Good Chemistry: The Story of Elemental,” as well as Pixar Animation Studios short “Carl’s Date,” featuring the fan-favorite talking dog Dug from “Up.”

At the box office, “Elemental” stumbled out of the gate with the worst opening weekend in Pixar’s history — before rebounding over the subsequent theatrical run. In 11 weeks, the film grossed $153.6 million domestically with a global haul of $480 million, per Box Office Mojo.

“Elemental” is Set in Element City, where Fire-, Water-, Earth- and Air-residents live together, the original feature film introduces Ember (voiced by Leah Lewis), whose friendship with a fun and sappy guy named Wade (Mamoudou Athie) challenges her beliefs about the world they live in. Directed by Peter Sohn, produced by Denise Ream and executive produced by Pete Docter, “Elemental” features a screenplay by John Hoberg, Kat Likkel and Brenda Hsueh with story by Sohn, Hoberg & Likkel and Hsueh.

In “Good Chemistry: The Story of Elemental,” Pixar director Sohn traces his parents’ voyage from Korea to New York, explores his dad’s former grocery shop in the heart of the Bronx, and delves into his choice of a career in animation rather than the family business.

“Carl’s Date” finds Carl Fredricksen (the older protagonist of “Up”) reluctantly agreeing to go on a date with a lady friend — but admittedly with no idea how dating works these days. His ever-helpful canine pal Dug steps in to calm Carl’s pre-date jitters and offer some tried-and-true tips for making friends… that is, if you’re a dog. The new short, which opened in front of “Elemental” in theaters, was written and directed by Bob Peterson and produced by Kim Collins.

Disney+ on Wednesday also launched a limited-time promotion offering the ad-supported version of the streaming service for just $2 per month for three months in the U.S. From Sept. 6-20, new and returning Disney+ customers in the U.S. can subscribe to Disney+ Basic (with ads) for $1.99/month for three months (75% off the regular price of $7.99/month). The special promo comes as the price of Disney+ Premium (with no ads) is set to jump 27%, rising from $10.99 to $13.99/month for U.S. customers, as of Oct. 12.
