Paul Mescal and Andrew Scott are closer than ever in the trailer for Searchlight Pictures’ upcoming gay romance “All of Us Strangers.” Helmed by Andrew Haigh, the film is an adaptation of Taichi Yamada’s 1987 Japanese psychological novel “Strangers.”
The two actors star as neighbors-turned-lovers — a screenwriter named Adam (Scott) and the enigmatic Harry (Mescal). As their relationship evolves, Adam returns to his childhood home to discover that his three-decades-deceased parents, played by Claire Foy and Jamie Bell, are seemingly alive.
Haigh previously directed the 2011 gay romance drama “Weekend” along with the 2017 coming-of-age road film “Lean on Pete.” “All of Us Strangers” seems to mark one of his most personal endeavors yet. In an interview with Vanity Fair, Haigh said, “To suddenly deal with my own past at the same time as I was telling a story about someone else dealing with their past — I’m not sure if it was foolish, emotionally or mentally. But it was a really strangely cathartic experiment.”
Aside from his strange journey into the past, Scott’s character engages in personal and sexual relationship with Mescals. On the film’s sex scenes, Haigh said he focused on bringing in a larger sense of emotional reality.
“Here, I really wanted to feel the subjective nature of having sex and what it feels like,” he told Vanity Fair. “The nervousness and the excitement and the physical sensation of being touched by someone else, and what that does to you.”
“All of Us Strangers” will premiere at New York Film Festival, followed by a theatrical release on Dec. 22. Watch the trailer below.
