“Fellow Travelers” stars Jonathan Bailey and Matt Bomer will not be competing against each for a Golden Globe.
Sources tell me that Bailey has decided to submit for supporting actor in a limited series for his work in the Showtime series, clearing the way for Bomer to go for lead.
“Fellow Travelers,” written by Ron Nyswaner and based on the Thomas Mallon novel of the same name, tells the story of a decades-long romance between a Washington D.C. bureaucrat (Bomer) and a social activist (Bailey) as they navigate the changing times from the 1950s through the AIDS epidemic.
News of Bailey’s Globes decision comes just days after I caught up with the Brit actor on Nov. 16 in Los Angeles at the GQ Men of the Year party, where he talked about the impact of “Fellow Travelers.” “I’ve been reading messages [on social media],” he said. “There are extraordinary outpourings of people who are either in the closet or live in countries where it’s completely illegal. There are so many parallels between D.C. in the Fifties and many countries where queer people live now. It’s been amazing for that reason, and it’s exactly why I think these stories are so important.”
Bomer took home the Globe for supporting actor for a TV movie/miniseries in 2015 for his work as a man dying of AIDS in Ryan Murphy’s HBO adaptation of Larry Kramer’s play, “The Normal Heart.”
The 2024 Globes will be broadcast for the first time on CBS. The 81st edition of the live awards show will air Jan. 7 from 8 to 11 p.m. ET/ 5 to 8 p.m. PT on the broadcast network immediately after an NFL on CBS doubleheader. The show will also stream on Paramount+ and be available on the CBS app as part of a new deal between CBS and the Golden Globes.
