Jennifer Lopez is ready to make art out of previous heartache. Her debut single off of her ninthalbum, titled âCanât Get Enough,â is set to premiere this Wednesday, Jan. 10.
âI have my new single, from my new album and my new movie,â Lopez told Varietyâs senior culture and events editor Marc Malkin on the Golden Globes carpet. âWednesday is actually a really big day, 22 years in the making.â
There to support her Globe-nominated husband Ben Affleck, J.Lo paused to tease her first studio album since 2014 and the upcoming, wedding-filled music video that will accompany the debut single.
âI think it might surprise some people. Itâs definitely kind of a meta story about the journey that it takes from getting from heartbreak back to love ⊠I am somewhat of an expert you could say in a real way. Not so much about marriage but on weddings,â Lopez said, poking fun at the fact that she has been married four times. âAgain, I donât take myself too seriously I think that life is a crazy journey where you fall down and you get back up, and you keep trying and you never give up.â
What does her current husband think about the video? âHe sees me as an artist. He knows that Iâm going to express myself. Heâs my biggest fan and my biggest supporter, as I am of him, which Iâm so glad to be here tonight because heâs nominated.â
Malkin then called attention to her red carpet ring, which was in the shape of a hummingbird. Lopez revealed that her ring was also an easter egg for her new music and exclaimed, âItâs hummingbird season!â
Lopez is set to star in a feature adaptation of the 1993 Broadway musical âKiss of the Spider Woman,â written and directed by âDreamgirlsâ filmmaker Bill Condon. Set in an Argentinian prison in 1981, the musical follows a fantasy woman named Aurora, dreamed up by Luis Molina, a gay window dresser serving an eight-year sentence for allegedly corrupting a minor. To cope with the horrors of prison, Molina imagines films starring Aurora as a classic silver screen diva. One of the films centers on a spider woman who kills her prey with kisses. Molina then meets Marxist Valentin Arregui Paz in his cell, and the two form an unlikely bond.
The 1993 musical and 1985 feature film adaptation of Puigâs novel from director HĂ©ctor Babenco both received critical acclaim and major awards. William Hurt won the Oscar for portraying Molina, while the musical won seven Tony awards â including best musical and recognition for all three performers.
Condon has worked on several of the most prominent movie musicals from this century, including 2002âs âChicago,â 2006âs âDreamgirls,â 2017âs âBeauty and the Beastâ and âThe Greatest Showman.â His other credits include âThe Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawnâ and the 2019 thriller âThe Good Liar.â He earned an Oscar for his screenplay for his 1998 film âGods and Monsters.â
Barry Josephson, Tom Kirdahy, Greg Yolen and Matt Geller are producing the film, with Lopez. Elaine Goldsmith-Thomas and Benny Medina executive producing on behalf of Nuyorican Productions.
âKiss of the Spider Womanâ marks Lopezâs first role in a full-fledged musical. The artistâs ninth studio album âThis Is Me⊠Nowâ will debut on Feb. 16.
