Ryan Reynolds Gives Emmys Speech as Deadpool: ‘The Oscars, You’re on Notice Motherf—ers! Maybe We Can Get a Token VFX Nod Next Year’

Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds‘ FX documentary series “Welcome to Wrexhampicked up five wins at the 2023 Creative Arts Emmys, including outstanding unstructured reality program. The two marked the occasion with a social media video in which Reynolds revived Deadpool to poke fun at the Oscars.

“Wow, an Emmy, what an incredible honor,” McElhenney said at the start of the clip. “There’s so many people to thank. I’ve been waiting for this moment for 16 years so I’ve got a lot to say. I’d like to start by thanking…”

The video then cuts to Deadpool. “First and foremost, Wrexham, we love you,” he said. “Thank you for letting Rob and the other guy tell your story. Cymru am byth, bitches! [translation: Wales forever, bitches]. I’d also like to thank the Academy for this honor and for not asking us to attend the televised awards show with the real celebrities [aka the Golden Globes, which were held on the same night].”

“Lastly, the Oscars, you’re on notice motherfuckers,” Reynolds added as Deadpool. “Maybe we can get a token VFX nod next year. The amount of work on Hugh and Ryan’s face alone is at least worth a nod.”

The comedy bit was referring to the upcoming “Deadpool 3,” which would be contending at the 2025 Oscars for any potential award for visual effects or other categories. Reynolds is being joined in the Marvel tentpole by Hugh Jackman, reprising his role of Wolverine. Production on the film was halted last year amid the SAG-AFTRA strikes, but filming picked back up again just before the Thanksgiving holiday.

“Deadpool 3” is notable for not only marking Jackman’s return as Wolverine but also for being the first Marvel Cinematic Universe production to continue a franchise originated by 20th Century Fox. The first two “Deadpool” films were released prior to Disney’s acquisition of Fox. Following the deal, Deadpool is now entering Disney’s Marvel Cinematic Universe and will be joined in the film by by other Fox-backed superheroes like Wolverine and Jennifer Garner’s Elektra.

“Deadpool 3” is set to open in theaters July 26 from Disney. Watch McElhenney and Reynolds’ full acceptance speech below.
