2024 Emmy Predictions:
Outstanding Drama Series

Commentary: The drama series category is poised for a significant overhaul in the upcoming Emmy season.

Seven of the eight nominees from last year will not be eligible for consideration this year. Only the Emmy winner “The Crown” from Netflix (winner of season four in 2021) will be in the conversation for its sixth and final season.

Apple’s “The Morning Show,” entering its third season, is among the top contenders on the list as a guilty-pleasure binge-watch that has enthralled many. Despite receiving acting nominations for Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon, and a first-season win for supporting actor Billy Crudup, it has yet to secure a spot in the top category, making this year a vital opportunity.

Other series seeking recognition include “The Gilded Age” from Max and Marvel’s “Loki,” both in their second seasons. Apple’s “Slow Horses,” now in its third, fresh off a win at the USC Scripter Awards (beating out “The Crown” and “The Last of Us”), also appears poised for its first drama nod.

Speaking of “The Last of Us,” Prime Video is entering the Emmy fray with its own dystopian video game adaptation “Fallout,” starring Ella Purnell and Walton Goggins. Given the TV Academy’s recent history of embracing genre series, such as “The Boys” for its second season, “Fallout” could resonate well in the evolving landscape, contending with other shows like Netflix’s “Avatar: The Last Airbender” and Disney+’s “Ahsoka.”

Other new entries in the drama race also include Showtime’s “The Curse,” a satirical black comedy starring recently Oscar-crowned Emma Stone, and Netflix’s “3 Body Problem,” crafted by “Game of Thrones” creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss.

As we sit in the early days of the TV awards season, many shows can rise and fall as the weeks unfold.
