Jacques Audiard’s ‘Emilia Perez’ Wins Best Film, Director, Screenwriter and Actress at European Film Awards

Jacques Audiard‘s “Emilia Perez” won best film, director, screenwriter and actress at the 37th European Film Awards, which were held Saturday in Lucerne, Switzerland.

The best film nominees included narrative features “The Room Next Door,” “The Seed of the Sacred Fig,” “The Substance” and “Vermiglio,” as well as documentaries “Bye Bye Tiberias,” “Dahomey,” “In Limbo,” “No Other Land” and “Soundtrack to a Coup d’Etat,” and animated films “Flow,” “Living Large,” “Savages,” “Sultana’s Dream” and “They Shot the Piano Player.”

The statuette for actress was won by Karla Sofía Gascón for “Emilia Pérez.” The other nominees were Renate Reinsve in “Armand,” Trine Dyrholm in “The Girl With the Needle,” Vic Carmen Sonne in “The Girl With the Needle” and Tilda Swinton in “The Room Next Door.”

Audiard won the screenwriter prize for “Emilia Pérez,” ahead of Magnus Von Horn and Line Langebek for “The Girl With the Needle,” Pedro Almodóvar for “The Room Next Door,” Mohammad Rasoulof for “The Seed of the Sacred Fig” and Coralie Fargeat for “The Substance.”

The actor award was taken by Abou Sangare for “Souleymane’s Story,” ahead of Lars Eidinger for “Dying,” Franz Rogowski for “Bird,” Ralph Fiennes for “Conclave” and Daniel Craig for “Queer.”

The European Discovery Award, given to a director for their first full-length feature film, went to Halfdan Ullmann Tøndel’s “Armand.” The other nominees were “Hoard” by Luna Carmoon, “Kneecap” by Rich Peppiatt, “Santosh” by Sandhya Suri, “The New Year That Never Came” by Bogdan Mureșanu, and “Toxic” by Saulė Bliuvaitė.

Best documentary was “No Other Land,” written and directed by Yuval Abraham, Rachel Szor, Basel Adra and Hamdan Ballal. Other contenders were Lina Soualem’s “Bye Bye Tiberias,” Mati Diop’s “Dahomey,” Alina Maksimenko’s “In Limbo,” and Johan Grimonprez’s “Soundtrack to a Coup d’Etat.”

Gints Zilbalodis’ “Flow” won best animated feature film. The other nominees were “Living Large” by Kristina Dufková, “Savages” by Claude Barras, “Sultana’s Dream” by Isabel Herguera, and “They Shot the Piano Player” by Fernando Trueba and Javier Mariscal.
