Yoshiki Hails the ‘Power of Art’ Accepting Variety International Achievement in Music Award

Yoshiki, the Japanese star whose work blends pop, rock and classical music, saluted “the power of art” as he accepted the Variety International Achievement in Music Award at Variety Hitmakers presented by AFEELA on Dec. 8 in Hollywood.

In his speech, the Japanese performer noted that he’s usually asleep at the current time of day, given the time difference between his native country and Los Angeles.

“This year has been full of memorable moments,” Yoshiki said. With pride, he noted that a few months before, he became the first Japanese artist honored with the addition of his hands and footprints to a cement slab outside the TCL Chinese Theatre.

“Today, I’m honored to be the first Japanese artist to receive this amazing Variety International Achievement in Music Award,” he said to applause from a roomful of music industry leaders.

Lately, Yoshiki’s career has expanded beyond music into movies and fashion design. He’s prepping for a runway show at Paris Fashion Week next month.

“But music remains my foundation,” he assured the crowd. “I’m a classical pianist, composer and I’m a heavy metal drummer. Rock and roll is dangerous, by the way — I had my third neck surgery from heavy head banging just several weeks ago.”

Yoshiki elaborated on how the spark of creativity is the common thread to all of his ventures. It all boils down to expressions of artistic vision.

“I’ve always wanted to prove how far art and music can take us, and receiving this award encouraged me to keep on going,” he said. “I’m so grateful to share this journey with all of you who understand the power of art. Thank you very much, Variety, for this honor.”
