The Alliance of Women Film Journalists has announced the awards for its 18th season, with both “The Brutalist” and “The Substance” continuing to be formidable forces this awards season.
Brady Corbet’s “The Brutalist” won best film against the likes of “Anora,” “Conclave,” “Emilia Pérez,” “Nickel Boys,” “The Substance,” “Sing Sing” and “Wicked,” another victory in the film’s belt after winning three awards at the Golden Globes. Coralie Fargeat won best director for “The Substance” along with best original screenplay, where she prevailed over Sean Baker, Payal Kapadia, Jesse Eisenberg and Mike Leigh.
“2024 was an exceptional year with so many women playing major creative roles in high profile projects,” AWFJ President Jennifer Merin says. “AWFJ always focuses on and supports women’s contributions in all aspects of film production, and we are delighted that this year’s AWFJ EDA Awards honor women creatives in non-gendered ‘best of’ categories, as well as in all of our female focus categories. We hope this female forward trend will continue in 2025.”
