Australian Animation ‘Lesbian Space Princess’ Lands at Blue Finch Films Ahead of Berlinale Bow (EXCLUSIVE)

U.K. outfit Blue Finch Films has snagged worldwide sales rights (excluding Australia and New Zealand) to the buzzy animated feature “Lesbian Space Princess,” ahead of its world premiere in the Panorama section at next month’s Berlin Film Festival.

The debut feature from Emma Hough Hobbs and Leela Varghese follows a sheltered space princess who embarks on a galactic mission to rescue her bounty hunter ex-girlfriend from the Straight White Maliens. The film, which blends sci-fi and comedy elements, puts queer women of color front and center in its narrative.

Umbrella Entertainment has already locked down rights for Australia and New Zealand, with Blue Finch set to launch international sales at Berlin’s European Film Market.

“We’re incredibly grateful to both Umbrella and Blue Finch for believing in our project. Our amazing cast and crew poured so much love and hard work into this project, and we can’t wait for it to premiere on the big screen at Berlinale,” said directors Hough Hobbs and Varghese in a statement.

Blue Finch Films’ managing director Mike Chapman praised the film as “an utter joy — not only side splittingly hilarious, but also immensely heart-warming.”

The film joins Blue Finch’s current slate, which includes horror title “825 Forest Road” from the “Hell House LLC” creative team, Sitges winner “Zero” from Jean Luc Herbulot and Indonesian horror “The Draft!,” which played at Fantastic Fest.

The project has already generated positive buzz following its Work-in-Progress screening at the Adelaide Film Festival.
