Hollywood Restarts After L.A. Fires: ‘Jimmy Kimmel Live,’ ‘NCIS’ and More Go Back Into Production

Production is beginning to restart in Los Angeles after pausing last week due to the wildfires that have devastated the area.

The CBS shows “NCIS,” “NCIS: Origins,” “Poppa’s House,” and “The Neighborhood” are all slated to resume shooting on Monday. According to an individual with knowledge of the situation, all four shows will shoot on closed sound stages with monitoring by health and safety professionals throughout the day. Any cast or crew impacted by the fires or those who cannot make it safely to the set will still receive their regular pay.

Likewise, ABC’s “Jimmy Kimmel Live” is set to begin filming again this week after going dark due to the fires. However, the CBS late-night series “After Midnight” will continue to pause production on Monday and Tuesday.

This is the latest blow to physical production in LA. The COVID lockdowns, writers’ and actors’ strikes, and the collapse of the streaming bubble have all driven down the total number of productions in recent years.

A large number of fires have broken out across the Los Angeles area since last week, when extremely dry conditions coupled with strong Santa Ana winds allowed fires to spread quickly, forcing evacuations of tens of thousands of residents. The Palisades fire has burned over 23,000 acres at the time of this publishing, while the Eaton fire has burned over 14,000. More strong winds are expected to hit Los Angeles and Ventura counties later this week, potentially driving new outbreaks while complicating fire fighters’ efforts to combat ongoing situations.
