“Succession” creator Jesse Armstrong has found his next project: an original movie for HBO Films.
The seven-time Emmy winner is teaming up with “Succession” executive producer Frank Rich for the project, which is said to focus on four friends who convene during a dramatic international financial crisis, Variety has confirmed. Both Armstrong and Frank are under overall deals at HBO.
Armstrong is currently writing the script, with a production start eyed for later this year. The studio is already out to actors to check availabilities.
“Succession” ended its four-season run in 2022. In telling the story of the fictional Roy family and the battle for control over its media empire, the show became one of the most acclaimed television series of the 21st century, winning 19 Emmys, including three for best drama series. It landed at No. 13 on Variety‘s ranking of the 100 greatest TV shows of all time. “There were moments of merriment in which the series felt like a comedy, but just as quickly, ‘Succession’ could become the saddest show you’d ever seen,” we wrote at the time.
Armstrong is best known for his work on the small screen. He co-created the beloved British sitcom “Peep Show” as well as the dramedy “Fresh Meat,” and he also wrote on “Veep” and “Black Mirror.” But Armstrong also has an impressive slate of film credits, earning an Oscar nomination for co-writing 2009’s “In the Loop,” starring Peter Capaldi, Tom Hollander, Gina McKee and James Gandolfini. Most recently, he adapted Ruben Östlund’s “Force Majeure” into the American dark comedy “Downhill,” starring Will Ferrell and Julia Louis-Dreyfus.
