It’s a full moon at the box office.
Universal and Blumhouse’s “Wolf Man” reboot has made $1.4 million in Thursday previews so far. As it opens this weekend, it faces off against Sony’s comedy “One of Them Days,” which made $1.3 million in previews.
“Wolf Man,” helmed by “The Invisible Man” director Leigh Whannell and starring Christopher Abbott, is expected to prevail and make $17 million to $21 million in its opening weekend over the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday weekend. “One of Them Days,” an R-rated comedy with Keke Palmer and SZA (in her acting debut), is on track for $8 million to $13 million between Friday to Monday.
Universal is going back into its library of classic monsters with “Wolf Man,” after Whannell’s “The Invisible Man” reboot succeed with a $28.2 million opening after making $1.65 million in previews. The 2020 horror film ended up making $143 million worldwide. “Wolf Man” only cost $25 million, so it should be able to scare up a profit at the box office. In addition to Abbott, “Ozark” star Julia Garner stars as the terrorized wife of a man turning into a lycanthrope.

“One of Them Days,” a rare theatrical comedy, stars Palmer and Grammy winner SZA as two best friends who go to outrageous lengths to scrounge up enough rent money to avoid eviction. It’s produced by Issa Rae and also stars Katt Williams, Janelle James, Maude Apatow and more. Macro Film Studios co-financed the film, and it only cost $14 million to produce, setting an easy bar for success.
