‘SNL’ Gave Scarlett Johansson a ‘Heads Up’ About Colin Jost Making a ‘Vagina Joke’ About Her, but She Was Still ‘Genuinely So Shocked’ By It on Air

Colin Jost joined Jimmy Fallon on “The Tonight Show” and was asked about whether or not he got in trouble with his wife, Scarlett Johansson, after that shocking “Weekend Update” on the “Saturday Night Live” Christmas episode (which aired Dec. 21). Jost and Michael Che always mark the holiday by swapping non-PC jokes that neither have seen until reading them live on air. Che went the extra mile for the most recent edition by having Johansson appear backstage while Jost read jokes at her expense.

“Are you in trouble with Scarlett?” Fallon asked Jost a month later.

“I’m in trouble, I think, with a lot of people,” Jost answered. “Scarlett was genuinely so shocked.”

The most viral moment of last year’s “Weekend Update” joke swap came when Che had Jost make a quip about Costco and Johansson’s vagina. The joke was as follows: “Costco has removed the roast beef sandwich from their menu. But I ain’t tripping. I’ve been eating roast beef every night since my wife had the kid.” The “SNL” audience reacted with gasps as the camera cut to Johansson jaw-dropped backstage.

Jost told Fallon that the “SNL” team gave Johansson a “heads up” about the NSFW joke, explaining: “They were like, ‘Hey, would you be okay if Michael made a little, like, kind of vagina joke at some point?’ She was like, ‘Sure, whatever, I’m open to it.’ I didn’t know where it was going.” “

“Scarlett was backstage like, ‘Oh my god, that’s what it is!’” Jost said about making the joke, adding that his response to her reaction was real because “I can’t act that well.”
