Why Katy Perry Leaned on Her Global Fanbase to Launch the U.S. Leg of ‘The Lifetimes Tour’: ‘I Want to Reconnect’

Katy Perry is coming home. Well, sort of.

Nearly eight years ago, when Perry put a cap on her “Witness” tour, the singer unintentionally left the stage as a traveling headliner for the last time. A global pandemic, and the birth of her’s and Orlando Bloom’s daughter, Daisy Dove Bloom, sent Perry on a unplanned hiatus. However, in just a matter of three months, Perry will be back on the road, bringing her pop classics to arenas and stages across the world.

After selling out “The Lifetimes Tour” in four continents, Perry has revealed plans to perform a hits-heavy set — a “feast for both the eyes and the ears,” Perry tells Variety — for her fans in the United States.

“It’s a larger than life experience,” Perry says of the 70-plus shows she’s determined to deliver. “For over 17 years, [my fans and I have] grown up together. They have their own lives, they have kids, they have careers, they’re they’re fulfilling their dreams. So see them still coming out and responding to this… I didn’t expect it and I can’t wait to give back to them.”

The trek will stop in several U.S. cities starting with Houston, Texas on May 7 at Toyota Center, and, for the first time since 2018, Perry will headline her own show in Los Angeles at the Kia Forum (July 15) and Madison Square Garden in New York City (Aug. 11).

Though “The Lifetimes Tour” will “draw from her extensive catalog,” Perry is also looking to spread the message she built into “143”: “I want people to feel like their territory is unique and special, and that’s why I got to go to some of these territories while announcing them,” she explains. “Everything I’m doing has been specific because I want the fans to feel special… when your favorite singers come to your town, it’s special that they’ve chosen this town to come to. I’m utilizing all of the things that I’ve learned along the way to give people a place to connect and find community.”

Perry’s legions of fans are all-embracing. When she previewed “The Lifetimes Tour” with a sprawling and high tech show at Rock in Rio in September, the same day she released “143,” a sea of 100,000 people sang feverishly along. It’s a symbiotic relationship, with some adopting songs like “Roar” and “Power” as personal mantras, relying on Perry’s lyrics and powerful vocals to get through everyday frustrations or deep-rooted emotional turmoil.

When Perry closed out the Inauguration Day Celebrating America concert in 2021, she surprised fans with a lush performance of her 2010 hit “Firework.”

“At the time, I think, we weren’t very united, and so it’s a similar sort of feeling today. [‘Firework’] really encapsulates my message of everyone having a spark. It doesn’t matter where you come from, what political belief you have — it doesn’t matter when all you want is to find what your purpose is and to make your dreams come true. I think that’s an American way of being.”

Donning Wonder Woman-esque uniform at Rock in Rio, Perry ran through her most recognizable singles — “California Gurls” and “E.T,” notably including a fair share of songs from her 2020 album, “Smile,” and her latest, “143.” Visually, the show heavily relied on futuristic themes, otherworldly technology and its impact on human connection.

“I’m definitely pushing the boundaries with these concerts,” she says. “I’m always pushing my team to develop something that’s not to help me develop something that’s never been seen or heard.”

“I also feel the responsibility to give my audience the songs that they know,” Perry adds. “I’m there to let them tap into the nostalgia… I really just want to reconnect. I want to lock eyes with my fans. It’s been a minute, and I feel very full up on love. I’m overflowing with it.”

Tickets for the U.S. dates will be available starting with Citi and Verizon presales beginning Jan. 28. The artist presale will begin Jan. 29 at 10 a.m. local time ahead of the general onsale starting Jan. 31 at 10 a.m. local time at KatyPerry.com
