Amazon MGM, Tiger Baby and Excel Set Theatrical Bow for Indian Festival Darling ‘Superboys of Malegaon’ (EXCLUSIVE)

Amazon MGM Studios is bringing its festival circuit hit “Superboys of Malegaon” to theaters.

The Indian film, which gained acclaim at the Toronto, London, Palm Springs and Red Sea fests in 2024, will see a multi-territory release across India, U.S., U.K., U.A.E., Australia and New Zealand before landing on Prime Video.

Helmed by acclaimed filmmaker Reema Kagti and penned by Varun Grover, the pic tells the true story of Nasir Shaikh, an amateur filmmaker from the small Maharashtra town of Malegaon. The narrative follows Shaikh’s journey as he rallies his friends to create homegrown cinema for their community, offering a glimpse into how grassroots filmmaking can transform a small town’s spirit.

“Following a group of small-town, DIY Indian filmmakers, Reema Kagti‘s ‘Superboys of Malegaon’ is a moving crowd-pleaser that constantly reaffirms its importance through its central theme,” wrote Siddhant Aflakha, reviewing the film for Variety. “It continually circles back to the idea that people must see themselves reflected in art, not just out of want, but out of deep desire stemming from need, in order to live with dignity.”

The project brings together powerhouse production banners Excel Entertainment and Tiger Baby, with industry veterans Ritesh Sidhwani, Farhan Akhtar, Zoya Akhtar and Kagti serving as producers. The ensemble cast features rising stars Adarsh Gourav, Vineet Kumar Singh, Shashank Arora and Anuj Singh Duhan in lead roles.

For Excel Entertainment, “Superboys” adds to a impressive slate that includes hits like “Gully Boy” (India’s 2019 Oscar entry) and the Emmy-nominated series “Inside Edge.” Meanwhile, Tiger Baby, under the leadership of Zoya Akhtar and Kagti, continues its successful run following acclaimed projects like “Made in Heaven” and “Dahaad.”

The film, due to release Feb. 28, is set for a global streaming release on Prime Video following its theatrical run, reaching audiences across more than 240 countries and territories.
