“The Substance” won big at the Dorian Film Awards, selected by GALECA, the Society of LGBTQ Entertainment Critics, with Mubi taking home five prizes.
For LGBTQ film of the year, Jane Schoenbrun’s trans allegory “I Saw the TV Glow” won, as did Schoenbrun’s screenplay in the LGBTQ screenplay category. In overall screenplay, Justin Kuritzkes won for writing the sports film “Challengers,” beating out Oscar-nominated favorites Sean Baker for “Anora” and Peter Straughan for “Conclave.”
Following the momentum built from the film’s best picture nomination at the Oscars, “I’m Still Here” won for non-English language film. In contrast, “Emilia Pérez” won in the LGBTQ non-English category. While “Will & Harper” didn’t land an Oscar nomination, it took home Dorian awards for documentary and LGBTQ documentary. “Flow” also picked up another prize in the awards season in the animated category, beating out “The Wild Robot” and “Inside Out 2.”
In the acting categories, which are not divided by gender, Demi Moore followed up her Golden Globe and Critics Choice wins with a lead performance victory against Mikey Madison for “Anora” and Adrien Brody for “The Brutalist.” She is also receiving the organization’s career achievement award for Timeless Star. Ariana Grande won the supporting actor award for her work in “Wicked,” beating Kieran Culkin for “A Real Pain” and Margaret Qualley for “The Substance.”
