Thursday Releases First New Song in 13 Years, Plans to Continue Recording Together

It’s been 13 years since post-hardcore band Thursday released its most recent album, “No Devolución,” but the group has finally dropped a new song.

The track, titled “Application for Release From the Dream,” came to streaming services after the band debuted the song live at a concert in Albany, NY. The song was also offered at the show’s merch table as a 7” single. “Application for Release From the Dream” is self-released, as the band has remained independent since their 2016 reunion.

Notably, a press release that accompanied the news revealed that “While ‘Application for Release From the Dream’ is a standalone release, the band are also continuing to work on more new music with plans to roll out songs as they record them, unmoored from the traditional approach of releasing albums.”

Lead singer Geoff Rickly spoke to Variety last year about how he was eager to write more music with the band, but he didn’t want to put big expectations on the result.

“I’m not going to push myself to write a Thursday album at this point in my life because I don’t want to fake it,” he said. “I have a great catalog of work with this band that I love. I’d rather have anything that we add from here on is a true entry into that catalog, rather than an older guy pretending he’s still got the same amount of vulnerable pain and heartbreak that he did when he was a kid.”

Thursday is currently performing intimate club shows with Many Eyes and Tim Kasher, and has European dates also set for this year. The band is also set to perform at the When We Were Young Festival in October, playing the 2001 album “Full Collapse” in its entirety.
