ROYAL RETURN

The Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC) has unveiled casting for Christopher Marlowe‘s “Edward II,” set to run at the Swan Theatre in Stratford-upon-Avon from Feb. 21 to April 5. The production marks the play’s first RSC staging since 1990.

RSC co-artistic director Daniel Evans will take on the title role, marking his return to acting after a 14-year hiatus. Evans, who joined the RSC leadership with Tamara Harvey in 2023, was last seen on stage in “Company” at Sheffield’s Crucible in 2011.

The drama follows King Edward II’s dangerous decision to elevate his lover Gaveston to a position of power, sparking a civil war that threatens to topple the monarchy. Newcomer Eloka Ivo will make his RSC debut as Gaveston, alongside fellow company first-timers Ruta Gedmintas (“His Dark Materials”) as Queen Isabella and Enzo Cilenti (“The Crown”) as Mortimer.

Daniel Raggett, who received an Evening Standard Theatre Awards nomination for emerging talent in 2022, will direct. The creative team includes Leslie Travers on set and costume design, with Tim Lutkin handling lighting.
