Content Americas Spain Upfront: Alex de la Iglesia’s Next, Spain’s ‘The Crown,’ A Singular Sleuth and Traffic Jam Pandemonium

Since Spain has become a leading European production hub for global streamers, little wonder that the country’s most regular content suppliers for major players receive a spotlight at this week’s Content Americas 2025 in Miami. 

On Tuesday, Jan. 21, some of the most awaited Spanish scripted productions will take center stage at the Miami-based TV market toplining the event Spain Upfront. Best of Spain’s New Content.

The Spain Upfront reunites key executives from four top Spanish distribution houses: Rosalía Alcubilla, head of global clients at pubcaster RTVE; Silvia Cotino, deputy director of sales and business development at Mediaset’s Mediterráneo; Miguel García, sales director of Atresmedia Sales, and Onza Distribution’s general manager Carlos Garde.

Saló will also unveil key data on the success of Spanish content in Latin America and the U.S. markets.  

Some of the next premium fiction titles to be presented at the Spain Upfront are:

“Ena” (“Ena. Queen Victoria Eugenia,” RTVE, La Cometa TV)

Javier Olivares, showrunner of Spanish TV scripted hits “Isabel” and “The Department of Time,” created this period drama, based on a novel penned by Spanish journalist-writer Pilar Eyre.

Produced by RTVE in collaboration with La Cometa TV, the series turns on a granddaughter of Queen Victoria, Victoria Eugenia of Battenberg, who was married in 1906 to Spain’s Alfonso XIII, and soldiered on through his affairs, a bomb attack on her marriage day, six children, exile and two world wars. 

Spanish actress Kimberley Tell (“Hierro,” “Eva’s Comet”) plays the leading role.

“We have told in six chapters forty years of unknown Spanish history,” Olivares argues. “The series refers to ‘Isabel’ in the sense of sharing a historical female character and to ‘The Department of Time’ for the way in which we have divided the topics, with each chapter told from a different point of view, creating a puzzle between them all,” he explains.  

“Detective Romi” (Romi, Mediterráneo, Mediaset Spain, Mandarina Productions)

Created by Iker Azkoitia, a writer on global hit “Elite,” and directed by Inés París (“The Barrier”), the eight-segment, 70-minute series follows the chronicles of 30-year-old Romina Goitia, a hearing-impaired private detective who investigates the long-ago death of her father, which she suspects to be murder.

The series toplines María Cerezuela, a 2022 best new actress Goya Award winner for “Maixabel.”  

“Her hearing impairment -originated from a traumatic event- and she suffers from a condition linked to a family mystery. On the other side, she boasts special non-verbal abilities and has her own audiovisual code to perceive the world,” notes Mediterráneo’s Silvia Cotino about what sets the protagonist apart. 

Detective Romi

“Santuario” (Sanctuary, Atresmedia, Pokeepsie Films)

Announced last week as part of Berlinale Market Selects and based on the same-title podcast created by Manuel Bartual and Carmen Pacheco, the TV drama represents an early Atresmedia’s bet on sci-fi TV fiction production. Atresmedia produces in collaboration with Alex de la Iglesia and Carolina Bang’s outfit Pokeepsie Films, part of Banijay group.

Toplining Aura Garrido (“The Department of Time,” “Stockholm”), Lucía Guerrero (“Grupo 7”) and Jaime Ordóñez (“El Bar”), the eight-episode series is set in a future after climate disaster, where women spend their pregnancy in the Sanctuary, a massive dome designed to prevent air pollution from affecting gestation. 

There, they live in peace, cared for away from their families and the rest of society. Pilar’s arrival will uncover the truth hidden by the Sanctuary.

“This is a unique series that stands out for its originality and vision. It unmistakably bears the creative stamp of Álex de la Iglesia,” says Miguel García, Atresmedia Sales director.

“It dives deep into moral dilemmas and challenges our perceptions of technology, humanity, and ethics. It is a thrilling, thought-provoking journey. We’re sure it won’t leave anyone indifferent,” García adds.

Santuario

“Traffic Jam,” (“Atasco,” Onza, in association with Prime Video and Publicis Rebellion)

Made in association with Prime Video and Publicis Rebellion, written and showrun by Rodrigo Sopeña (“La hora de José Mota,” “Club Houdini”), an ensemble comedy set at a huge gridlock as evening falls, affecting thousands of drivers: a couple in crisis, a happy family, strangers sharing a car, a second-hand car driven by a salesman with his customer, an indecisive bride, a flamenco group….“‘Traffic Jam’ digs into a complex universe full of personal conflicts and relationships. It turns the commonplace into a funny and friendly situation thanks to an all-star cast comprised of top-notch comedians,” says Gonzalo Sagardía, Onza executive producer. “The audience will easily engage with the series and follow up each storyline as it is universal. This will be a friendly and funny traffic jam for the first time ever.”
