Razzies 2025: ‘Joker 2’ Leads With Seven Noms, Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga Up for Worst Actors; ‘Madame Web,’ ‘Megalopolis,’ ‘Reagan’ at Six Nods

This year’s Academy Award nominations are set to be announced Thursday, after being delayed due to the devastating Los Angeles fires. As such, the annual Golden Raspberry Awards got to get ahead of the Oscars on Tuesday with their own crop of nominees, highlighting what its members believe to be the worst in film for 2024. “Joker: Folie à Deux” leads the field with seven nominations, while “Madame Web,” “Megalopolis,” “Borderlands” and “Reagan” are close behind with six nods apiece.

For “Joker: Folie à Deux,” the musical sequel to Todd Phillips’ Oscar-nominated DC Comics crime film “Joker,” landed nods in worst picture, director, screenplay and prequel, remake, rip-off or sequel. Lady Gaga and Joaquin Phoenix are both up for worst actress and worst actor, respectively, as well as worst screen combo. The “Joker” sequel was poorly reviewed out of its premiere at the Venice Film Festival and wound up a box office bomb, grossing $206 million worldwide against a $200 million production budget. In comparison, the first “Joker” earned more than $1 billion globally, with Phoenix winning the Oscar for best actor.

Notably, the Razzies’ official press release of nominations provides a miscount, stating that “Joker: Folie à Deux” is in a tie for most nods at six. In fact, it has seven. But the Golden Raspberry Awards haven’t exactly been a serious operation since being founded in 1981. Recent dishonors of its own include issuing an apology for the “insensitive” nomination of child actor Ryan Kiera Armstrong for her performance in the horror remake “Firestarter,” as well as rescinding the original category of “worst performance by Bruce Willis in a 2021 movie” after the actor and his family publicly disclosed his aphasia diagnosis.

Nominations this year were determined by emailing ballots to a group of 1,200-plus voters, each of whom have paid either an annual fee of $40 or a lifetime membership fee of $500. Indeed, anybody can be a Razzies voter, as anybody can do whatever they want with their money in America if operating within the confines of the law. The larger Razzies base will vote on winners, which will be announced March 1, the day before the Academy Awards.
