Best Film Editing Commentary (Updated Jan. 21, 2025): The American Cinema Editors (a.k.a. ACE Eddies) put their pulse on the season for editors and gave significant boosts to films like “Civil War and “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga,” which popped up on the drama side alongside “Dune: Part Two,” “Conclave” and surprisingly “Emilia Pérez” (the other side is titled “comedy” — not “comedy/musical” like the Globes).

Missing from the lineup was “The Brutalist,” “A Complete Unknown,” “Nickel Boys,” and “September 5,” all of which can still make it, given there’s typically an Oscar nominee or two that cut missing ACE.

With comedy, the group opted for “Anora,” “Challengers,” “A Real Pain,” “The Substance,” and “Wicked,” all needing this mention as they eye best picture recognition.

The eventual Oscar winner in film editing has earned an Eddie nomination during the past decade. The winner of Eddie for a Dramatic Feature won the Oscar in film editing four times during that period, including last year’s “Oppenheimer” by Jennifer Lame. A comedy winner won once over the same time frame – Paul Rogers for “Everything Everywhere All at Once.”

When it comes to “Anora,” writer, director, producer and editor Sean Baker put his heart and soul into the dramedy, and it could see him mimic a day similar to Chloe Zhao, who was also quadruply nominated for “Nomadland” (2020). She won two of the four — director and best picture. A good luck charm?

The 97th Oscars will be held on Sunday, March 2. All movie listings, titles, distributors, and credited artisans are not final and are subject to change.
