‘Happy’s Place’ Starring Reba McEntire Renewed for Season 2 at NBC

The multi-cam comedy “Happy’s Place” has been renewed for Season 2 at NBC, Variety has learned.

The series, which marked Reba McEntire’s return to the sitcom format, originally debuted on NBC on Oct. 18. It was picked up for a full season at the broadcast network in November.

Per NBC, the pilot episode has reached 17.6 million viewers across all platforms, while the show itself has improved the Friday 8 p.m. timeslot at NBC by 54% in total viewers compared to last season.

Along with McEntire, the cast includes Belissa Escobedo, Melissa Peterman, Pablo Castelblanco, Tokala Black Elk, and Rex Linn.

The official logline for the show states, “Bobbie (McEntire) inherits her father’s tavern and is surprised to discover that she has a new business partner, Isabella (Escobedo), a twentysomething half-sister she never knew she had.”

Kevin and Julie Abbott created “Happy’s Place.” Kevin serves as an executive producer alongside McEntire, Michael Hanel, Mindy Schultheis, Matt Berry, and Pamela Fryman. Universal Television is the studio.

“Happy’s Place” has received solid reviews from critics, with the first season holding a 70% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. In her review for Variety, Aramide Tinubu wrote, “Though critics only received two episodes in advance, thus far, ‘Happy’s Place’ is nostalgic, funny and heartfelt. In addition to an eclectic cast of characters and McEntire’s signature edge woven throughout the comedy, the Tennessee-set sitcom feels like a universal crowdpleaser about family, friendship and generational divisions while paying homage to past TV shows’ rhythmic beats and tone.”

“Happy’s Place” is now the second freshman NBC comedy to earn a second season, alongside “St. Denis Medical.” That show as picked up for Season 2 back in January. Fellow NBC comedies “Night Court” and “Lopez vs. Lopez,” both currently in their third seasons, are still awaiting word on renewals for next season. Likewise, the freshman medical drama “Brilliant Minds” is still awaiting word on another season.
