CBS Orders ‘Smallwood’ and ‘Good Sam’ to Series

CBS has added one comedy and one drama to its fall TV lineup, with series orders for “Smallwood” and “Good Sam.”

“Smallwood,” based on the real-life story of professional bowler Tom Smallwood, stars Pete Holmes, Chi McBride and Katie Lowes. Mark Gross is executive producing and writing, with David Hollander and Brian D’Arcy James also exec producing and Mark Cendrowski directing. The comedy follows a seemingly ordinary man who, after being laid off from his assembly line job at the GM factory, decides to provide for his family by pursuing his dream of becoming a pro bowler.

“Good Sam,” meanwhile, stars Sophia Bush, Jason Isaacs, Edwin Hodge, Skye P. Marshall, Michael Stahl-David, Davi Santos, Omar Maskati and Wendy Crewson. Katie Welch is executive producing and writing, with Jennie Snyder Urman also serving as exec producer and Joanna Klein exec producing for Sutton St. Productions. Tamra Davis is exec producing and directing the pilot. The drama series is centered on a talented but stifled surgeon who steps into a leadership role after her renowned, pompous boss falls into a coma. When he awakens from his coma and looks to get back to work, “it falls to her to supervise this overbearing blowhard who never acknowledged her talents – and also happens to be her father.”

The comedy and drama join a number of other shows that CBS has already ordered to series for the 2021-2022 broadcast season: “CSI” sequel “CSI: Vegas,” Dick Wolf and Universal TV’s “FBI: International,” “NCIS: Hawai’i,” as well as single-camera comedy “Ghosts.”
