Steven Soderbergh’s Crime Drama ‘No Sudden Move’ to Premiere at Tribeca Film Festival

Steven Soderbergh’s upcoming crime thriller “No Sudden Move” will have its world premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival.

The film is set to screen on June 18 — at The Battery in New York City — as the festival’s centerpiece gala selection. The cast of “No Sudden Move” is expected to make an appearance at the outdoor event, which is taking place as part of Tribeca’s 12-day celebration to reopen the city and bring back live entertainment. Don Cheadle, Benicio del Toro, David Harbour, Jon Hamm, Brendan Fraser and Kieran Culkin star in the film, but Tribeca’s organizers did not specify who will be in attendance.

“A year ago I was on lockdown in Tribeca, so I never imagined we could return 12 months later with a new movie screening for a live audience in our neighborhood. I’m VERY happy,” Soderbergh said. The filmmaker behind a range of blockbusters and indie hits, including “Erin Brockovich,” “Magic Mike,” the “Ocean’s” trilogy and the hopefully soon-to-be irrelevant “Contagion,” most recently produced this year’s Oscar ceremony.

Set in Detroit in 1954, “No Sudden Move” centers on a group of small-time criminals hired to steal what they think is a simple document. When their plan goes awry, they search to find out who hired them — and for what purpose. Other than its debut at Tribeca, the movie isn’t playing in theaters and will instead launch on HBO Max on July 1.

“‘No Sudden Move’ is a fantastic addition to our lineup and Steven has been such a great friend of the festival. Each year, he brings a unique ability to capture audiences through his films, with such powerful and prolific moments,” said Jane Rosenthal, co-founder and CEO of Tribeca Enterprises and the Tribeca Festival. “I suspect this year will be no different. ‘No Sudden Move’ will definitely be a crowd-pleaser and I’m looking forward to enjoying it under the New York skyline.”

Paula Weinstein, Tribeca’s chief content officer, said the festival is “thrilled” to have Soderbergh’s latest as part of this year’s lineup.

“Once again, Steven has assembled a powerhouse ensemble cast in a story that is uniquely Soderbergh,” Weinstein said. “The festival’s audiences are eager to celebrate the moviegoing experience together again and this film will thoroughly entertain.”

Tribeca will run from June 9 through June 20. The fest, in its 20th year, is hosting both indoor and outdoor events to ensure festival-goers can safely gather. In a first for the festival, Tribeca is also hosting community screenings in each New York City borough.
