Sebastian Stan, Lily James’ ‘Pam & Tommy’ Series Is ‘Wild, Shocking, Painfully Sad Ride,’ Says Director Craig Gillespie

Director Craig Gillespie doesn’t want to reveal too much about “Pam & Tommy,” his upcoming Hulu series about Pamela Anderson and Tommy Lee’s marriage and infamous sex tape, but he certainly offers a good tease or two.

“The scripts are pretty amazing,” Gillespie said while promoting his latest film, Disney’s “Cruella.” “It’s going to be a wild, shocking [and] painfully sad ride.”

The series, currently shooting, stars Lily James (“Downton Abbey”) as Anderson and Sebastian Stan (“Falcon and the Winter Soldier”) as Lee. “They’ve just completely embodied these characters in such a fun way, and the chemistry is amazing,” Gillespie said. He first worked with Stan when he directed the actor in “I, Tonya.”

A photo of James and Stan in character released on Instagram last month quickly went viral.

Stan revealed during a recent appearance on the “Just for Variety” podcast that the photo was taken during their screen test. “I don’t remember who, I think it was probably Craig, who said, ‘Hey, let’s go out in the sun and why don’t we do that?’” Stan recalled. “We were like, ‘Oh, that’s fun.’ And then we just did it.’”

He was relieved that people finally saw him his transformation. “Honestly, it was freeing because I was walking around in these hoodies and hats… just paranoid of being seen,” Stan said. “I was like, ‘God, I hope they’re finally going to release something so you know what we look like, so we can go on with our lives.’”

Stan posted another photo of himself on set. He is shirtless but wearing an apron that reads, “Kiss da Cook” as well as a pair of shorts and black Converse sneakers.

The “Pam & Tommy” cast also includes Seth Rogen, Nick Offerman, Taylor Schilling and Andrew Dice Clay. Hulu has not announced a premiere date for the series.
