Jerry Seinfeld to Direct, Produce and Star in Pop-Tart Origin Story ‘Unfrosted’ for Netflix

What goes great with coffee? Pop Tarts — naturally.

After the success of “Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee,” Netflix has nabbed Jerry Seinfeld’s latest venture, a new movie about the creation of the Pop Tart. Seinfeld will produce, direct and star in the comedy, co-written with Spike Feresten and Barry Marder.

The concept for the movie was inspired by a joke Seinfeld told during his last stand-up special, 2020’s “23 Hours to Kill.” Production is set to start next spring.

Seinfeld and Netflix have had a very successful relationship since 2017, when the legendary comic signed on with the streaming, in a deal that brought his interview series “Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee” to Netflix. As part of the partnership, Seinfeld produced two original stand-up specials — “23 Hours to Kill and 2017’s “Jerry Before Seinfeld” — both of which earned Emmy nominations.

Later this year, Netflix will begin streaming “Seinfeld,” after acquiring the global rights to the comedy series in 2020.

Deadline was first to report news of the project.
