‘The Great’ Canceled After Three Seasons at Hulu

The Great” is not returning for Season 4 on Hulu, Variety has confirmed.

The satirical take on Catherine The Great’s story painted the historical figure as “an idealistic, romantic young girl, who arrives in Russia for an arranged marriage to the mercurial Emperor Peter. Hoping for love and sunshine, she finds instead a dangerous, depraved, backward world that she resolves to change. All she has to do is kill her husband, beat the church, baffle the military and get the court onside,” according to the official description.

The series starred Elle Fanning as Catherine, Nicholas Hoult, Phoebe Fox, Adam Godley, Gwilym Lee, Charity Wakefield, Douglas Hodge, Sacha Dhawan, Sebastian de Souza, Bayo Gbadamosi and Belinda Bromilow.

Season 3, which was released on May 12, picked up with Catherine and Peter (Hoult) who agree to work on their marriage after Catherine previously had his friends imprisoned and attempted to murder him. The season also saw Catherine’s struggle to win the favor of the Russian people, as Peter looks to keep himself occupied while struggling with visions of his late father (Jason Isaacs).

“The Great” was created, written and executive produced by Tony McNamara. Fanning also executive produced alongside McNamara Hoult, Marian Macgowan, Mark Winemaker, Echo Lake’s Brittany Kahan Ward, Doug Mankoff and Andrew Spaulding, Thruline’s Ron West and Josh Kesselman. Civic Center Media produces in association with MRC Television.
