‘Eras Tour’ Surprise: Taylor Swift’s Concert Film Opens in Theaters One Day Early

Taylor Swift is bringing her “Eras Tour” to the big screen a day earlier than planned.

The concert film was originally scheduled to open on Friday the 13th (to coincide with her lucky number), but the singer has announced a surprise shift in release to a day earlier, with showtimes beginning Thursday at 6 p.m.

“Look what you genuinely made me do: Due to unprecedented demand we’re opening up early access showings of The Eras Tour Concert Film on THURSDAY in America and in Canada!! As in… TOMORROW,” Swift wrote on Instagram. “We’re also adding additional showtimes Friday and throughout the weekend. All tickets will be available by 10am tomorrow morning. And it’ll be showing starting Friday in 90 countries all over the world.”

She continued, “I can’t thank you enough for wanting to see this film that so vividly captures my favorite adventure I’ve ever been a part of: The Eras Tour. And the best part is, it’s an adventure we’re still on together.”

Before the added showtimes, “The Eras Tour” was projected to collect a staggering $100 million to $125 million in its domestic box office debut. The movie, a concert film documenting the pop star’s three-hour stadium tour performance, looks to generate another $30 million to $50 million internationally, bringing its estimated global debut to $150 million to $175 million (or more).

As of last Thursday, “Eras Tour” had surpassed $100 million in advance ticket sales worldwide (which includes domestic and international markets), according to its official distributor AMC Theatres. So, before it even graces the big screen, it already ranks as the highest-grossing concert film in history ahead of 2011’s “Justin Bieber: Never Say Never” ($99 million), according to Box Office Mojo.

“Eras Tour” is a boon for movie theaters, who have been bracing for a lighter fall after several big titles, including “Dune: Part Two,” were delayed by studios due to the SAG-AFTRA strike. Part of the excitement is because Swift has encouraged her fans to treat the big screen extravaganza like it’s another stop on her record-breaking, sold-out stadium tour. “Eras attire, friendship bracelets, singing and dancing encouraged,” she wrote on Instagram when she announced the theatrical release.
